Top Things To Know
1) Giants Take the Court
At 6-7, Christopher Eubanks isn't often the "short" player on the court. But Tuesday night he faces 6-11 Reilly Opelka. While there is no record for the tallest match in tournament history, we do know that the tallest final here was between 6-6 Marin Cilic and 6-8 Kevin Anderson, four total inches shorter.
2) Qualifier, Lucky Loser Advance
Lucky loser Ethan Quinn needed more than luck in his first-round win on Monday. After Quinn led Tristan Boyer by a set and 5-3 with a match point at 5-4, Boyer fought back to take the set and a 5-3 lead in the decider. Quinn turned the tables and fought back to win it in a third-set tiebreak. Michael Mmoh, who just returned from an elbow injury last week after nine months off the tour, won two qualifying matches and won his first round in main draw for the second straight week.
3) Nishikori Returns to DBO for First Time in 11 Years
Speaking of qualifiers, one of three qualifiers to have won the Delray Beach Open is Kei Nishikori in 2008 when he was 18 years old and ranked No. 244. It was his first title and he went on to win 11 more, reach the 2014 US Open final and a world ranking of No. 4. He is on the comeback trail now at age 35 and has already reached a final this year. He faces wild card Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday,a two-time semifinalist here.
4) Grandma's Tennis Legacy
Australian James Duckworth's grandma was probably a better player than most players' grandmas - Beryl Penrose swept the singles and doubles titles at the 1955 Australian Championships. She would have been proud of her grandson when he represented Australia at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Duckworth takes on eighth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Tuesday, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open last month.
5) Record for Number of Americans in Second Round (Still) on the Line
It's still possible to tie the record for most Americans in the second round with 9, equaling the record set in three previous years. Six are already there. One more is guaranteed with two Americans facing each other. Two others face opponents from other countries.
